Title: 0630 Day's first cup of coffee
Artist: Hakka ( [personal profile] prue84 )
Fandom: Star Trek (TOS)
Pairing: Kirk/Spock (implied)
Characters: James Kirk
Rating: G
Tagline: Extract from the Captain's Schedule: 06.30 Wake up. Brief with the bridge.
Series: Second in this bathrobe miniseries. First piece here.
Notes: Ohh, see where Jim is. Has he picked the wrong door the night before? XD And look whose bathrobe he's wearing!
Tec stuffs (aka Behind The Manip): Fuck this: I can't fix the awful quality of Shatner's promo pic even if my life depended from it. I don't like the face's position either but the original pic had already this weird angle and I couldn't make any better, with my limited manip skills.
That's why I hate to make TOS manips: there's little to nothing to work with, unless you go for the screencaps - that not always work. There are some HQ promo pics but they have weird colors and I'm still unable to turn them into "normal".
Disclaimer: Don't own anything on this. Full credits below the manip itself.

Me again. First and foremost: He doesn't look bad at all! Au contraire: Face and hand are a perfect match, angle of the head is fine - why are you so hard on yourself? The light is perfect, he virtually melts into the background, and he has that sexy look.....really, you must learn to appreciate your own work!

BTW, when it comes to colours and promo shots, do you work with 'selective colour'? I'd say it helps a lot.

This piece was ready since... well, it sat on my HD for a couple of weeks I'd say. I made it after the reboot one was done but I didn't fell like post it because I wasn't satisfied with Shatty. Yesterday morning I gave it a last try playing a bit with all the effects under "adjustment" but nothing... and then I sort of gave up and went "the hell with this".
I don't know, probably part of why I'm always the worst critic of my own work, is (besides be a stupid perfectionist) because I know which parts I put together so I always see this Frankestein kind of image made of many images put together, instead of an unique smooth image? I know I shouldn't be - seen photos that had something "wrong" in them but were original, not manipped! - but I can't help it.

However, you words warms my heart, because I still really can't believe the color/lights on Shatner's face (never will) but knowing someone like you believe the head works, after all, helps shutting down that little voice in me that keeps saying that this manip is shitty. :D

[Next time I'll work with TOS promo material, I'll probably try everything under "adjustment" BEFORE cut out the part I need. I spent too much time to work with a head and then trashing it because I can't blend it on the image - see TOS Jim in the Knight Rider manip: that wasn't the original head I meant to use]

Perfectionism is good - as long as it doesn't block your creativity.

Moi, I have my own problems with perfectionism, but I go with the Japanese wabi sabi - a work of art is REAL art when it's faulty: the vase that isn't perfectly round, the glaze with the crack, the bureau with signs of wear and tear....I like the philosophy behind it - life is change, nothing is perfect, and even the perfect changes with time - it makes life (and manipping) easier! ;)

Okay, here I am again, making a nuisance of myself: I just found your fics on archive_of_our_own, read the first one and am suffering from a broken heart.....;) - and just want to know: do I have to know the movies to fully understand your fics?

Apart from that, I loved 'You could be happy', Spock's POV better even than Jim's, not a word too much, beautifully in character.

No nuissance at all: I like a "chat" now and then (a reason why I hate Tumblr, even though I'm there because by now everyone's there)!

Oh, that fic is evil, I know. It's sad that the fanart that prompted it is no more available. I should upload it in my scrapbook, because I feel it's a fundamental part of the fic. Argh, I KNEW I had it saved on my desktop, but I cannot find it on the huge fanart folder I have on my laptop, and this is making me throwing a fit.
Anyway, the art has been reblogged here (http://pinkandsatiny.tumblr.com/post/19563868253/medicatedmaniac-st-you-could-be-happy-by)

Hard to reply, to the question. For the fic I already published, you need to know the characters in their reboot version because they - in my mind at least - would never work if you read them imagining TOS Jim and TOS Spock in place of the reboot guys. Knowing or not knowing what happened in the movies is... probably irrelevant, but then... the characters are shaped by the movies events as well (the events that more shape both Jim and Spock happen in Into Darkness, by the way, and as of now I still have to publish any fic in which the events of ID have a place).
Is this answer clear enough? *not sure*

Thank you! <3 <3

Thanks for the link to the pic! And believe it or not: that was what I saw in my mind's eye when I read the story, so I think I understood it alright.

And I'll try to catch up with the movies, read synopses, etc., when I think there's a gap in my understanding. - Or I'll show up and ask stupid questions! ;)
